A multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation of the effects of foraging on landfills on white stork nestlings

The use of landfills as foraging areas by white storks (Ciconia ciconia) is a recent well-known behaviour. While several studies have highlighted positive effects at populational level others suggest that the presence pollutants, pathogens and lower antioxidants in food could pose health risk for individuals. objective this study was to evaluate potential resource on physiology stork nestlings, multidisciplinary approach based analysis nutritional status, body condition, blood parameters, oxidative stress balance pathogens. Results showed better condition individuals associated with compared ones feeding natural resources, well indicated higher levels albumin, cholesterol, triglycerides plasma. As many pollutants pro-oxidant effect, we evaluated balance, no differences indicators damage except methaemoglobin (metHb), significantly nestlings landfill-origin food. Regarding antioxidants, GSH landfills, which may hormetic response induced potentially waste. Nestlings fed from also had Escherichia coli multiresistant phenotype antibiotics. In conclusion, our results show proportion present status than those diet, being only negative percentage metHb peripheral antibiotic-resistant E. coli.
